“Ursula married a local farmer, John Boley, and settled comfortably into the role of a farmer’s wife. They were both wonderfully disorganised and their kitchen was something again – piled with empty boxes, beer crates, dented cake tins full of buys from the local church sale. Ursula was my conduit to the rest of the family, writing quite regularly letters backed with descriptive details of the countryside around, the arrival and departure of migratory water fowl, herons, nesting blue tits, the first daffodils and violets – she would have made a very good writer.”
