ANDREWS family tree

Marion Andrews who married Edward James Tilley on 12 February 1938 can trace her Welsh roots to her great grandparents John and Mary [Evans] from Furnace, a hamlet in Ysgubor-y-coed in the northernmost part of Ceredigion.

In the 1841 census John was an agricultural labourer. An agricultural labourer was usually a married man who lived elsewhere (often in a tied cottage) and who was paid a daily or weekly wage for the job that he performed. He and Mary had four children ranging in age from eight to Marion’s grandfather, two-month-old James. By the following census, the couple have lost one child, Evan.

In the last census that John appeared in, 1861, his occupation was given as carrier, a driver of (horse-drawn) vehicles for transporting goods. James was a 20-year-old apprentice joiner.

James was present at both his parents deaths; John died of asthma and stomach cramp on 22 August 1866, while Mary was 64 when she passed away on 23 September 1872. They are buried in the graveyard in St Michaels Church, Eglwysfach.

James married Elizabeth and they had eight children; John (b.1862), Ann (b.1864), Elizabeth (b.1867), David (1868-1957), James (b.1872), Thomas (b.1875), Mary (b.1878) and Gwen Elizabeth (1880-7 Jul 1890).

Elizabeth died aged 53 on 3 August 1889 while James lived another 30 years, remarrying before passing away on 28 February 1919. Elizabeth and James parents are buried at St Michael’s Church graveyard in Eglwysfach.
