David Rowland Andrews
David “Dai” Rowland Andrews was born on 12 November 1868 in Ysgubor-y-Coed a community in the northernmost part of Ceredigion, Wales.
In the 1881 census, he was 12 and living at home in Cardigan with his parents James and Elizabeth [Evans], as well as his older brother John (19) and younger siblings James (9), Thomas (6), Mary (3) and Winifred (1). The address given is “Scybor-Y-Coed”, the same as on his birth certificate, which is now Ysgubor-y-coed. Ten years later, David was a drapers assistant at B.Evans and Company (described as drapers, silk mercers, carpet and furniture factors), in Temple Street, Swansea.
In the 1901 census, he was 32 and a manager of a furnishing warehouse. He married Jane Ellen Roberts in 1893 in Machynlleth, Wales. They had five children, Hilda Gwendoline (6), born in Morriston, Ernest Llewellyn (4), Lilian (3), Mary Violet (2) and David Rawlands, an infant, all born in Swansea. Sadly, Jane Ellen died during childbirth on 6 July 1906 aged just 35.
Ten years later, in the 1911 census, he was a furnishing salesman having married 40-year-old Margaret Scorey (formerly Rowlands), a widow from Newborough, Anglesey, in Bristol in 1908. Three of his children, Ernest, Lillian and John (who was born two years after the last census), are living with them as well as their children, Marion (2) and Robert (infant) as well as Elizabeth (3), a child of Margaret’s from a previous relationship. The family are living at 19 Hepburn Road in Bristol. Later, David lived at 3 Brighton Park, a half-hour's walk away.
David died at 23 Balaclava Road, Bristol on 12 November 1957 at the age of 89 with Margaret predeceasing him in 1950.

Memories
“A grand old Welshman, I was very fond of my grandfather and used to sit fascinated as he listened to the Welsh Home Service on the radio, in Welsh. He regarded himself as a refugee, forced to flee to Bristol after his furniture business in Swansea went bust.” — Robert James Tilley (1938 - 2015)
