Marion [Andrews] Tilley
Marion was born on 21 May 1909 in 8 Brunswick Street, Bristol, to Margaret (Scorey [Rowlands]) and David Rowland Andrews. Marion’s father, a furniture salesman, was born on 24 January 1869 in Eglwys-Fach, Cardigan, Wales, the son of James Andrews, a coal merchant, and Elizabeth Evans. James was the son of John (b.1829) and Mary Andrews.
David and Margaret (b.29 May 1872) married at Bristol Register Office on 6 February 1908. David’s first wife, Jane Ellen Roberts, who he married in Machynlleth, Montgomeryshire, Wales in 1893, died in Bristol in 1906.
Marion (also known as Anne) married Edward James (Jim) Tilley on 12 February 1938 at Bristol Register Office and they had two sons, Robert James and Nicholas Edward. She died at the age of 84 on 1 July 1993 at the Stuart House Care Home in Weston-super-Mare, a year after her husband. Marion was cremated and buried with her husband at St Andrew’s Church graveyard, Loxton, Somerset.

The birth certificate of Marion Andrews reveals spelling errors notably her father’s middle name which should be Rowland and her mother’s former surname which was Scorey, not Scory.

The 1911 census shows Marion living at 19 Hepburn Road, Bristol, as a two year old with her mother, Margaret, and father, David Rowland Andrews, as well as her siblings, Ernest Llewellyn, Lillian, John, Robert (Bob*) and Elizabeth. Her father was a furnishing salesman from Cardigan in Wales, while Margaret came from Newborough on the Isle of Anglesea, Wales.

Memories
“I suspected, but I wasn’t sure of this, that my mother was a single mother, bringing up the girl that the family led me to believe was my cousin. Jacqueline was a very beautiful young thing but had huge emotional problems, understandable because my mother gave her away to her sister Bessie to bring up (my interpretation was that my father’s family, very conservative and traditional, pressed my father not to pursue the relationship with my mother unless Jacqueline was given away). It really was a family tragedy and I always shied away from trying to get to the bottom of the story.”
“Marion’s favourite brother, Bob* (b.1911), was a dog-racing bookie and also owned a dog (Roberta's Pride, named after his daughter). Now, that guy could tie a bow tie — he liked to dress the part and sported a wide, red and white polka dot one.” — Robert James Tilley (1938 - 2015)

Until recently, Jackie (pictured) was a mystery to the family. Her half brother, Robert James Tilley, grew up believing her to be his cousin and only as his mother lay on her deathbed did the true story behind Jackie emerge. She was born Jacqueline Margaret Dorothy Andrews on 7 February 1936 at 214A Cambridge Road, in Hackney, London. Her mother, Marion, was a costumier’s saleswoman living at 172 Amhurst Road, Hackney. When Marion later met her future husband, Jim, it gave her a dilemma as she had a child out of wedlock. At the age of two, Jackie went to live with one of Marion's sisters, Elizabeth (Bessie). We believe Jackie worked in theatre but have little to go on. She moved from a home in Weston-super-Mare to The White Lodge, Braydon, Wiltshire in 2002 under the Court of Protection where she died a spinster on 17 October 2012. Jackie was cremated at Kingsdown Crematorium in Swindon on 9 November 2012. She was 76 years old and her ashes were scattered within the Trees of Remembrance area on 13 November of that year.
