Charles Henry Tilley, born 16 August 1879 in Rolfe, Pocahontas County, Iowa, could trace his roots back to Somerset and his great, great, great grandparents Matthew Tilley (1700-1768) and Anne Baller (1700-84).
His father Edward came to America in 1855 when Edward was eight with his parents Matthew (1816-1901) and Sarah [Pether], brother and sisters. Edward married Ann Jane Hammond on 16 September 1867. They came to Idaho in 1908 and made their home at Rock Creek. The couple, who were farmers, had 11 children – four boys and seven girls. They retired to Kimberly, Idaho, and Ann Jane died in January 1925 while Edward passed away aged 90 on 19 August 1937.
Charles married Agnes Johnstone Alexander Howlett and they had three children, Mildred Victoria (b.1906), Paul Leslie (b.1908) and Ruth Agnes (b.1910). He died only aged 32 of typhoid fever on 30 March 1911 in Canada.

The death certificate of Charles Henry Tilley shows he died of typhoid fever aged 32 on 30 November 1911.
Charles' grandfather Matthew and 10 other families built cabins in the Rolfe area, Iowa, around 1860. Nine cabins were completely destroyed, however, one still remains and that is the Tilley Cabin. In 1967 the cabin was relocated and restored in Streit Park, Rolfe, and is now used for educating school children about the pioneers.
