Charles Tilley

 

Charles was the son of William and Jane [Webber] Tilley, and a brother of Thomas (1809-93). He was born in Weare, Somerset, in 1823.

He married Ann Sophia Harden, who was born on 16 July 1832 in Chapel Allerton, at St Peter and All Hallows Church, West Huntspill, on 12 April 1853.

 

Charles, a farmer, and Ann Sophia lived at Compton House in Compton Bishop. They had nine children – William (1855-1926), John (Jack) Wesley (1857-1933), Elizabeth (1858-1907), Sarah (Minnie) (1860-1936), Alice Jane (1863-1953), Frederick Charles (1864-1940), Mary Sophia (1867-1952), Alfred Henry (1868-1952) and Albert James (1870-).

 

Charles passed away on 2 August 1901 in Axbridge, Somerset, at the age of 79. Ann died on 28 February 1909 at her home, Compton House in Axbridge, Somerset.

The next year the school was arranged to be held as near the original home of Cheddar as possible, the site being Compton House Farm, Axbridge, in the occupation of Mr Charles Tilley. Here the Somerset County Council appeared on the scene, and made a grant of £1,000 toward the cheese and the butter schools.

In the 1881 census Charles was farming 195 acres, employing two men as well as a servant indoors and a dairy maid

In the 1901 census, Charles Tilley was 78 and four of his children were living at home. Alfred Henry and Albert James were both farmers
