William Tilley
William, the son of Mary Stock and Henry Tilley (1750-1819), was born in Chapel Allerton and baptised at St Congar, Badgeworth on 4 September 1776.
He married Jane Webber (1770-1859) in St Gregory’s Church, Weare, on 17 July 1799. Jane was born in Weare on 17 March 1770 to Mary [Carter] and James Webber. William and Jane lived in Sparrow Hill Farm in Weare, Somerset. William died on 12 March 1869, aged 94, with Jane having predeceased him in 1859 at the age of 80.
William and Jane’s children were:
Ann (5 Jan 1800) married James Stokes (a lodging housekeeper in Weston-super-Mare) on 13 March 1827 in Weare.
Harriett (31 Jan 1802) married George Jervis, a farmer in South Brent, on 28 April 1828 in Weare.
William (28 Sept 1807) married Mary Harden née Watts (born 6 Oct 1807, South Brent, died 1870) on 15 March 1837 at St Gregory’s Church, Weare. He died in Bridgwater in 1890.
Thomas (1809 -1893) married Sarah Duckett on 10 June 1845. They lived at Town End Farm.
Elizabeth* (16 May 1812/7 Aug 1814) married John Sevier, a farmer. They lived in Weare.
John (1820-1893).
Charles (1822-1901) married Ann Sophia Harden on 12 April 1853.
James (22 July 1827 - buried 2 May 1828).
*there are two baptisms in Weare, it may be that the first Elizabeth died (there is a death recorded on 5 August 1813) as there is another in 1814. In a later census she is listed as Eliza.

The register at Somerset Heritage Centre shows William Tilley's birth registered in September 1776.

Jane, the daughter of James and Mary Webber, was baptised on 17 March 1770. She is the fifth listing down.


William Tilley married Jane Webber in St Gregory's Church, Weare, on 17 July 1799.
The census of 1841 shows William and Jane Tilley living at Sparrow Hill Farm in Weare with three of their children including Thomas.


William is a farmer of 143 acres and has three labourers in the 1851 census. His son Charles, 28, is living at home as well as his niece, Caroline Jervis, and nephew, Fred Watts.
In the 1861 census 85-year-old widower William is living at 47 West Street, Axbridge, with his house servant, Sarah.

William Tilley's death certificate reveals the cause of death as "Decay of Nature" at the age of 94.

William’s wife Jane was buried on 30 July 1859 at the age of 80 in the parish of Weare.

The burials register in the parish of Weare shows William Tilley was 94 years old when he was buried on 18 March 1869.


The book in which Jane Tilley's burial is recorded is kept at Somerset Heritage Centre in Taunton.
