Thomas Tilley

 

Thomas Tilley was christened on 7 January 1810, the fourth of ten children of Jane [Webber] and William Tilley (1775-1869).

 

He married the first of his four wives, Sarah Duckett, at the parish church of Mark, Somerset, on 10 June 1845. Sarah was the daughter of farmers Sarah [Fear] and William Duckett from Mark in Somerset. 

 

They had two children — their son Thomas  was born in 1849 while their daughter, Sarah, who was born in 1847, only lived for six days, and was buried at St Andrew's Church, Compton Bishop.

 

Sarah died aged 38 on 2 December 1858 in Cross and is buried at St Andrew's Church, Compton Bishop. Thomas married Sarah Parker on 30 January 1861 and she is the Sarah on the 1861 census she died in the same year on 25 September. He then married Ann Wride (born 1825) at Puxton on 19 February 1862. She died aged 48 on 11 May 1873 and is buried in Weston Cemetery. 

 

Thomas married a fourth time by licence at St John's Church, Weston-super-Mare, on 28 October 1876 to Amelia Hulbert (born 1830). She was a spinster, the daughter of Charles Hulbert, a labourer. Her brother Thomas was a clergyman of the Church of England.

Thomas, who died at the age of 84 on 3 December 1893 at his home Addington House, is buried with his second wife, Sarah, at Milton Road Cemetery, Weston-super-Mare.

Amelia died aged 63, four days after Thomas, on 7 December 1893 and their deaths were registered at the same time.

In his will, Thomas Tilley left a hundred pounds to the parish church of St John's at Weston-super-Mare. This money was to be distributed yearly at Christmas to provide bread and meat to the poor of the parish as reported in The Western Daily Press of 24 December 1904
